Favourite Foods FPP

Last week my eldest son turned 14 and I spent AGES in the run up to his birthday trying to think of little gifts to get him (his big gift was sorted a while back as he wanted a gaming chair) so that on the morning of his birthday there were a few parcels for him to open. He is already on the 'difficult to buy for' list, visible on the horizon are the future Christmases where everyone else's gifts were sorted weeks previously and I am still racking my brain for any idea for him.

When I was flicking through the 100 Paper Pieced Quilt Patterns book a week or so before his birthday and saw the pretzel pattern (he loves pretzels) and then the burger, pizza and popcorn (also his favourites) I had to make them and turn them into a cushion for him for his bed (he's a teenager so sleeping is also a main pastime).

The burger and pizza blocks are by Joanne Hart (@UnicornHarts on Insta) and the pretzel and popcorn are by Monika Henry (@PennySpoolQuilts on Insta). They are great fun to sew up and quick too at only 6in square.

I couldn't resist embroidering a few detached chain stitch sesame seeds on top of the bun and although I didn't quilt the food much some swirly quilting seemed appropriate for the popcorn.

The background fabric is a Karen Lewis Blueberry Park print from Robert Kaufman that my friend Lynne brought me back from Gotham Quilts in New York and I've been saving it for something special. The background is more heavily to help bring the food forward.

To make it extra tactile and comfy the reverse is a super soft longer pile Shannon Luxe seal fabric, I use it for my Norman Cat kits normally but there are a few end-of-roll offcuts in the scraps box.

He likes it - and had both pizza and pretzels on his birthday too.
